SkillsUSA Begins Team Selection for WorldSkills Shanghai 2022
Competitors will represent the United States against the greatest young talents in the world
Leesburg, Va. — SkillsUSA will once again field a team of talented young skilled trades experts who will represent the United States at the 46th WorldSkills Competition, the largest international showcase of the skilled trades.
SkillsUSA and its technical experts in six trade areas are currently working to put together the 2022 team that will compete in Shanghai, China on Oct. 12-17, 2022. SkillsUSA plans to compete in the following skill areas: Automobile Technology, Car Painting, Cooking, Heavy Vehicle Maintenance, and Welding. Team sponsors and team members will be announced and highlighted over the next few months.
The selected team members will each be young masters of their craft. Their dedication to training and perfecting their skills will be on display as they compete against peers from across the globe in a variety of high-level skills challenges. This team will show remarkable resilience given recent COVID protocols and possible changes in training methods due to travel or other restrictions.
“We will watch these competitors gain expertise as we prepare for Shanghai,” said SkillsUSA Executive Director Chelle Travis. “We’re thrilled the 2022 WorldSkills USA team will represent our nation while excelling at a skill they love. Each team member comes from all corners of the U.S., and competes for different reasons, but they will all be focused on one goal: standing atop the WorldSkills podium, honoring our country and our SkillsUSA members who will be cheering them on.”
Every two years, more than 1,400 competitors from over 80 countries and regions around the world compete in more than 60 different trade skills at WorldSkills. The international competition showcases dozens of trade skills from construction and building technology, creative arts and fashion, information and communication technology, manufacturing and engineering, social and personal services, and transportation and logistics.
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. The organization works year-round to instill positive attitudes, build self-esteem and empower career and technical students nationwide to excel and follow their career passions. The organization has 650 national partners and is integral to the training in nearly 18,000 career and technical education classrooms.

The first WorldSkills competition was held in 1950 in Madrid, Spain. In 1973, President Richard M. Nixon recognized SkillsUSA (then VICA) as the official U.S. representative to WorldSkills. The United States and SkillsUSA have come a long way since first entering the competition in 1975. Hundreds of thousands of spectators, public policymakers, employers, teachers, trainers, technical experts and government officials from around the world will attend this biennial competition and watch the WorldSkills USA team make the United States proud.
