The first member named to the WorldSkills USA team for Shanghai is Cooking competitor Isis Prieto. She graduated high school in Florida and represented the state at the 2018 SkillsUSA Championships, winning the high school gold medal. “I grew up in Havana, Cuba, to which I owe a great part of my love for food,” Prieto says. She trained at Sheridan Technical College in Hollywood, Fla. and is now a few steps away from completing a bachelor’s degree at The Culinary Institute of America in New York.
“In the past few years I’ve gained priceless knowledge from kitchens like Alter in Miami, Fla. and The Amsterdam in Rhinebeck, New York,” she says. Prieto is currently working at Blackberry Mountain and the J.C. Holdway restaurant in Knoxville, Tenn. and looks forward to continuing to expand her skills with the help of all the talented individuals she encounters through the WorldSkills training and competition process. “My gratitude for the opportunity of competing as a WorldSkills USA representative is immense, and I truly look forward to every aspect of this journey.”
Cooking contest technical expert Greg Beachy said the team selection was difficult this year. “It was a very close decision, but her skills and passion made the difference,” Beachy says of Prieto.
