Representing the United States at WorldSkills in Automobile Technology

WorldSkills competitor Nathan Bulthuis says the 2024 Automobile Technology competition will allow him the opportunity to represent the United States in an international competition. He is also looking forward to meeting new people, making industry connections and seeing how his skills compare to some of the best in the world. Bulthuis represented the state of Illinois at the SkillsUSA Championships and won a national gold medal in Automotive Service Technology in 2023. He is a former student at Lockport Township High School and Joliet (Ill.) Junior College and is attending Southern Illinois University Carbondale with an expected graduation date of May 2025 with a Bachelor of Science in Automotive Technology. His expert, Mike Elder from Pittsburg, Kan., will train Bulthuis for the competition. Bulthuis credits his success in learning Automotive Technology to his dad and grandfather in his early years, to Lockport Township High School and then to his teacher at Joliet Junior College, James Tiberi. “When I was young, I was always taking stuff apart and putting it back together and then I worked with my dad and grandfather to learn the basics.”

Bulthuis says he loves to learn new things. “The industry is always evolving, and I get opportunities to put the knowledge I’ve gained to a practical application.”

Bulthuis says, “Being selected for the 2024 WorldSkills USA Team is an amazing opportunity to learn more about my trade and to improve my skills.”
